After You're Selected for a NYC Housing Lottery

Contacted or selected in a NYC Housing Connect lottery? The usual next steps: document review, interview, final review, and lease signing. Independent guide.

Updated October 28, 2026

Being “selected” or contacted in a NYC Housing Connect lottery usually means a marketing agent wants to verify your eligibility — not that you have secured an apartment yet. You may still need to pass document review, an interview, final agency review, and wait for a unit that matches your household size. Outcomes vary; this guide does not predict your result.

We summarize common steps described in public Housing Connect and HPD affordable housing materials. NYC Housing Lottery Alerts is an independent service and is not part of NYC government.

How You Might Hear Back

Contact often arrives by email or mail from the building’s marketing agent (sometimes copied to Housing Connect messages). You might also see status changes under My Applications, such as Contacted.

Typical reasons for outreach:

  • Request for income, asset, and household documentation
  • Invitation to schedule an eligibility interview
  • Follow-up questions after an initial document submission

If contact information in your Housing Connect profile is outdated, you can miss a window even with a favorable log number. Update phone, email, and mailing address promptly.

Document Review Before the Interview

Most applicants submit a document packet before an interview is scheduled. Agents verify that your household still fits the lottery’s AMI band, bedroom size rules, and any preference categories claimed on your application.

See our dedicated document review timeline for stages, common delays, and how to check Housing Connect status while your file is in review.

The Eligibility Interview

If your documents are accepted, the agent may schedule an in-person or virtual interview. Interviews commonly cover:

  • Household members living with you now versus on the application
  • Current employment and income sources
  • Rental history and whether you have housing court cases that must be disclosed
  • Whether you still meet preference requirements listed on the lottery

Bring original IDs and supporting papers unless the agent specifies otherwise. Answer consistently with what you already submitted — discrepancies can pause or end your file.

Interview timing varies by building management. Some schedule within weeks; others take months. No universal schedule applies to every lottery.

HPD and Final Approval Steps

For many city-regulated affordable units, the marketing agent forwards a certified applicant file to HPD (or the relevant oversight agency for that program) for review before a lease can be offered. You may not see every internal step in Housing Connect.

Possible outcomes after interview:

  • Approved pending unit — You wait for a vacant unit that matches your household size.
  • Additional documentation requested — Respond quickly and in writing if you need clarification.
  • Disqualified — Income over the maximum AMI, household changes, or failed verification can end the process for that lottery.

Even after approval, rent-stabilized lease signing depends on unit availability — especially in buildings where tenants must move out first.

Application Status Labels to Know

In My Applications, you may see labels such as:

  • Submitted — Application received before the lottery ran
  • Lottery Run — Random order (log number) assigned
  • Contacted — Agent reached out for next steps
  • Waitlist — In queue without an active offer
  • Closed / Disqualified — File ended for that lottery

Statuses are building-specific. A Waitlist label does not always mean you will never be called — some agents reopen files when earlier households drop out.

For day-to-day waiting before contact happens, see how long the process can take.

While You Wait for a Unit

If you are approved but no apartment is ready:

  • Stay reachable — agents call down a list until someone accepts.
  • Do not assume another housing opportunity will conflict until you sign a lease for this building.
  • Keep applying to other open lotteries unless an agent tells you that you must withdraw (uncommon before lease signing).

Alerts and Help Organizing Your File

New lotteries open weekly. Email alerts can notify you when listings match your borough, bedroom count, and income band so you are not relying on a single building’s queue.

If you want help sorting pay stubs, tax returns, and preference proofs before an interview, consider our one-time Concierge application help. It is optional assistance organizing paperwork — not a guarantee of selection or faster agency review.
